Professional Designations

Student Counsellor

A candidate in training.

Institutional Counsellor

This is a counsellor that works in an institutional setting such as that of a church, municipality, school, or clinic and has completed a basic training relative to the counselling skills requirement of the respective institution.

Example is an HIV/AIDS counsellor who works for the provincial health department.

This is the lowest category. Institutional counsellors are required to work under supervision of a person or department to whom it must regularly report. Minimum training is a basic qualification in counselling. The evaluation panel will assess your qualifications and make a recommendation. Please submit it along with your application form.

Counsellor

This is a counsellor with a minimum of a THREE year (or equivalent) qualification in counselling.

Such a counsellor may work in either an institutional setting or on her/his own as a registered counsellor/practitioner.

The counsellor works as a skilled helper to support people in finding solutions to problems, entering into a helping relationship, referring people who may need specialized help to a psychological counsellor/psychologist.

Specialist Counsellor

This is a counsellor with a minimum of an applicable postgraduate (or equivalent) qualification in counselling.

Such a counsellor may work in either an institutional setting or on her/his own as a registered counsellor/practitioner.

The counsellor works as a skilled helper to support people in finding solutions to problems, entering into a helping relationship, referring people who may need specialized help to a psychological counsellor/psychologist.
